I’ve been a "Start with Why" guy since 2012.  A true believer. But I just read something in Bill Belichick’s The Art of Winning that raised my game.

Coach Belichick talks about an exercise called Play to Honor. Players and coaches stand before the team & share more than "why" they played—they name and talk about "who" they played for.

Diving far deeper than “for the love of the game.”

Who is:

A grandparent who sacrificed everything.

A sibling battling illness.

A fallen teammate whose memory still fueled them.

When the player shared their story with the  team, walls came down. Empathy and commonality brought the team closer together. That’s the elevation. Why is important, but Who anchors you. It makes the mission personal.

I’ve lived long enough in leadership to see this play out:

If you only work for what, you burn out.

If you only work for why, it stays abstract.

But when you work for who—you’re grounded, driven, and connected to something bigger than yourself.

Share your who. Honor them. And then go win—together.
